Press Release: Easter in the City

For the past two years, the congregations of Riverside Community Church and St. Paul Baptist Church have come together to celebrate Easter at the Peoria Civic Center.   Individuals from all walks of life have been blessed by the Easter in the City celebration.  Riverside Community Church and St. Paul Baptist Church are currently focusing on having a long term impact in the City of Peoria; therefore, Easter in the City will not be held this year.  Pastor Hubbard and Pastor King have enjoyed a wonderful working relationship and they are currently working on exciting opportunities for the future.

This year, the community will have the opportunity to celebrate Easter by attending any one of six services that will be held at Riverside Community Church and St. Paul Baptist Church. Pastor Hubbard and Pastor King stated that, “Easter is a day for Christians to rejoice and celebrate the resurrection of Jesus Christ, and we are excited to be able to offer six options for the community to attend an Easter service.”

The service schedules are as follows:

Riverside Community Church:

March 22 – 6PM

March 23 – 9AM and 11AM.

St. Paul Baptist Church

March 23 -- 7:30AM, 9:30AM, 11:30AM

Both churches are designing unique Easter programs, and this new approach will give the community the chance to attend services at both churches.

Being an "If the Lord Wills Person"

Desiring God’s will over my will led me to put together a  process that I follow in seeking to know the will of God for any area of my life.

My first stand is to

Be Righteous.

By that I mean there are times when because I know the character of God. I know before I ever seek His will what He wants me to do. Being righteous means to do what is right. There are many areas where I know what God wants me to do. I know he wants my marriage to succeed. I know he hates divorce. I know that out of control debt is not His will. So when I am seeking His will, the first thing I ask is “What is the right thing to do?”

Prayer

It seems so simplistic to say that if I want to know God’s will I need to pray, but it has to  be said. It is said that most pastors only spend an average of four minutes a day praying! If that is the case of those called to lead, where does that leave the rest of the Christian community. My stance is this, I spend as much time as possible talking with Jesus. Over the years I’ve gotten to hear His voice easier. Because I know His voice, I know what He wants me to do. I don’t mean that I spend hours and hours in prayer. I don’t, but I am in constant touch with Him through my day. It’s an ongoing hour by hour conversation.

God’s Word

I also have come to a place of reading God’s word daily. I have however changed the way I read God’s word. I used to just read a chapter here and a chapter there. I no longer do that. I read systematically. I no longer skip all over the Bible. I choose one of the sixty six books of the Bible and read through that book believing that God, who is sovereign, is able to speak to me through His word to confirm His will for my life.

My greatest illustration of this was when I was praying through whether I should uproot my family from England and bring them across the ocean to America. I went to God in prayer and said “Lord, tomorrow morning I am going to pick my Bible up and read from where I left off today. Please confirm Your will by Your word. I was reading in the book of Genesis. I got up the next morning and started reading from where I left off the day before. Imagine my shock when I read the first verse Gen 12:1 The Lord had said to Abram, “Leave your country, your people and your father's household and go to the land I will show you.

By reading God’s word systematically, it gives God the opportunity to speak to me supernaturally. If I am seeking His will and I don’t get a Biblical confirmation, I will not move on what I am asking God about. It either means “No, I don’t want you to go in that direction,” or “Wait, it’s not the right time”.

The Apostle Peter says that we can trust the word of God for guidance. Look what he said in 2Pe 1:19.  I love the way it’s translated by the New Living Translation. “We have even greater confidence in the message proclaimed by the prophets. Pay close attention to what they wrote, for their words are like a light shining in a dark place-until the day Christ appears and his brilliant light shines in your hearts”.

We all want prophetic words to confirm our decisions. Peter says, the Word of God is THEE more sure word of prophecy.

Mentor Input

My next step in knowing God’s will is to talk to my mentors. There are people in my life that I know have my best interests at heart. I begin with Letty, my wife. Wives and husbands are really a very valuable resource of wisdom for us if we will only ask them. I have other friends, too, whom I have known my over the years and I trust them to tell me the truth and to give me the best of their guidance. They are such a valuable resource. Some of the best decisions I have made or adjusted have come after talking with my friends and mentors.

Now one final very definite source of guidance - I call it:

The Peace of God

1 Cor 14:33            “For God is not [the author] of confusion, but of peace”.
I have lived much of my Christian life on the basis of Phillipians 4:6 & 7

6       Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. 7   And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.

After you have prayed, read God’s word, and talked to others you love and trust, you have to trust the peace of God that fills your heart.

If I am given a choice of two or more directions I could go, I always come to this final test “What does my heart say?”

I look at each possible way I could go and ask myself what way fills me with the most peace?

It may not be the easiest way or may not be the way you would think I would go, but it’s the peace of God in my heart that I look to for confirmation about the way I will go.

Be assured that if you really are seeking to do God’s will He will not fail to communicate His will to you.

God bless you as you seek to be an “IF THE LORD WILLS PERSON”.
