Fear Factors 2008

A huge thank-you to everyone who helped make Fear Factors a success this year!  We raised over 1000 pounds of candy resulting in worm pies for Pastor John, Pastor Aaron, Pastor Aubrey, Nick and the children’s ministry staff.  Both gyms were packed with kids having fun playing games, going through an obstacle course, jumping in an inflatable, getting balloon animals made and of course getting lots or candy!    The evening concluded with a Fear Factors service which included gross-out games, prizes and most importantly a salvation message.  The most exciting part of the evening was when many kids raised their hands to accept Jesus as their savior- too many hands to count!

The night could not have been a success without the support of Riverside’s members coming together to collect candy, set up and clean up the event, run games, pray and show God’s love to the many kids and parents that came through our doors that night!  This evening is a true reflection of what God can do through us when we join together as a team!

Election Eve Prayer

What an honor for Riverside to host the second City Wide Election Eve Prayer service! Prepared and promoted by two of Riversides most faithful workers workers, Barb LaHood and Martha Dakin, it was an exciting night of unity and commitment to Jesus. It was also a unique time of praying for the election and a number of Candidates who came along. The Pastors who prayed did so with great anointing and sense of Gods blessing on their words. Another unforgettable night at the church that exists for others to know Jesus.

Backpack Peoria 2008

Many Peoria families breathed a little easier this weekend as Dream Center Peoria handed out roughly 2500 backpacks (across four locations) loaded with back-to-school essentials.  Backpack Peoria provides a much needed financial break for many families, as school supplies add up quickly.  This year's event attracted local news coverage from the Peoria Journal Star and WHOI.

Mission Peoria: A View from the Frontline

This is a letter from A4 Peoria Director Dave Jane about his experiences with Mission Peoria 2008.  If you haven't been a part of Mission Peoria in past years, maybe this will inspire you to come out for one of the evening sessions, or join in next year!  Also, the Peoria Journal Star printed an article about Mission Peoria (link at the bottom of the page).

I am writing to you all on Day 3 of Mission Peoria to keep you updated.

It has been an incredible week so far. Over 160 students and adults are here (our biggest crowd ever) from 11 different churches. Most are from the Peoria area, but there are kids here from churches as far away as lake Zurich, Tinley Park and Rock Island. There are even two teens from England(!!) who are here on vacation staying with their cousin who happened to have signed up for Mission Peoria ..... so they came along too.

Each morning the students have been in 3 different district 150 schools (Manual, Woodruff and Peoria High) doing service projects (laying mulch, weeding, painting). The maintenance staff and media that have visited are all amazed by the fact that all these students are taking a week out of their summer break to do this; that they’ve paid to be here; and that they’re smiling while they do it!! They are all a great testimony to Dream Center and Jesus.

In the afternoons they are running 6 different baselines (kids outreach programs) around the city. From the South Side to Taft to Morton Square Park, we have seen 100’s of children come out to play games, ride water slides, get their face’s painted and hear a fun presentation of the gospel message. One of the groups showed up at Martin Luther King park yesterday on the south side. We have never run a baseline here before. Slowly kids started to trickle in from the surrounding community as the word got out of what we were doing. By the end of the afternoon we had 70 kids at that one baseline!!

Each evening we have been holding services for the Mission Peoria students in the sanctuary at RCC. Through intense worship and powerful messages we have already seen God challenge and change the hearts of these students. It’s hard to say that I have a favorite part of the day, but I do love watching teenagers who have been working hard and giving out all day go running to the altar in the evening to dance and sing and worship God.

If you are in need of a spiritual boost, and would like to get a little taste of what Mission Peoria is all about, please feel free to come along to one of our evening meetings at RCC tonight and tomorrow. The meetings begin at 7:15 and normally wrap up at 9:00. There are plenty of adults there, so you won’t stick out :) If the message or music don’t move you, the response from the teenagers will.

Thanks to all of you for your prayers and support this week (especially with the office being a little more hectic than usual with teens running up and down the halls). Please continue to pray. Friday night is our final big outreach where we will bus all these kids into the Riverplex and Aubrey will present the gospel. Then Saturday morning we will be giving out 2500 backpacks to families from all over the city. Then Sunday we plan on all going to bed and sleeping for 24 hours straight!!(after church of course).

Dave Jane

Bare Feet, Open Hearts

We never could have expected the overwhelming response to Sunday's service about sacrifice. This letter, from one of our attendees, tells the story:

"This morning, God decided to shake my world up a bit, as He sometimes tends to do.

The sermon this morning was about “Sacrifice”. I was challenged as I listened to the contrasting stories of Abraham- as he was willing to give up his only son as an offering; and the rich young man- who loved his possessions so much that he chose them rather than choose Christ. I sat there and listened. In my mind I was cheering for Abraham, smiling and soaking in the beauty of that kind of sacrifice. In my mind I was scoffing at the rich man, who thought his possessions were more valuable then spiritual healing. How could he? Didn’t he realize what he was saying no to? Didn’t he realize that this would be his salvation?? I mean, how truly superficial can someone be?

It’s funny how we tend to compare ourselves with holiness, and think we measure up. To think we have somehow managed to stack up there with the great people of faith, and listen to correction and advice as though it was meant for the one sitting behind us. And then God decides to shake us up a bit, reminding us of where we really stand- reminding us of how much of our sin His grace truly covers.

Pastor King then took the next step in talking about sacrifice...in discussing this unfathomable word that brought Christ down to this earth to show us the true meaning of love. He challenged us to apply this word to our lives..to be a living example of the sacrificial love of Christ.

Oh- okay, I thought. I got this stuff down. I wake up early on Saturdays to hang out with the poor of the inner city, I make sure to keep the house clean and dinners delicious for my husband, in fact- I’m even going on a mission trip next month to a third world country- talk about sacrifice...as I mentally went down my list of sacrifices, checking off the boxes, getting holier and holier by the moment.

Pastor King spoke of the poor and needy that he saw this week, lining up in front of the Church, waiting for the free clothing the Ministry could offer them. He spoke of their needs...most of them not even owning a decent pair of shoes. We were challenged to consider their needs, to consider the act of sacrifice, giving to others what they do not have, doing for others what they cannot do. To realize how much we have been given, and be able to give back that kind of love...literally. We were challenged to come up to the altar, and lay down our shoes.

My shoes??? You’ve gotta be kidding me. I love these $15.00 shoes, I wear them to work everyday. They sparkle...and have such a cute little heal..and they’re oh, soooooo comfortable. How about I just write a check? OR maybe go buy a pair of shoes for the poor...that would be honorable. Or how about just tell myself that this doesn’t really reflect the condition of my heart...I mean, God REALLY knows my heart.

And then it hit me. God REALLY does know my heart. He knows the darkness, the selfishness, the rationalization that lives within it. Sad...but oh so freeing. He knows the struggle...he knows the superficial tendencies I have. He knows the deepest parts of me- the fight between my spirit and my flesh. I began to cry. I couldn’t believe what a battle this had been for me, to give up a cheap pair of shoes. What makes me scoff at the rich young man, when I struggle at the idea of a giving a personal possession? It hit me then that I had been the rich young man all along...I had been the one blessed with the ease of life, the comforts of America, the freedom of my faith and my religion. I had been the rich young man all along...in giving what is easy, what is timely, what is practical and convenient. In giving when I feel like it, when I have extra, and when I know it will make me look good. My own sort of “wealth”...I call it comfort.

God shook me up real good this morning, and I am so glad he did. I am so glad He opened my eyes to realizing how much I need him everyday, to teach me what it means to truly love....to truly give. I had somehow convinced myself that I had it all figured out.

I write this because I want to be held accountable. I want to be a woman who is known for giving and loving like my Father, like my Savior. I want to be a woman that offers when it isn’t convenient, and when it stretches my faith. I want others to be challenged like I’ve been challenged this morning, to live out the love of Christ in the day to day, when eyes are on us, and when they aren’t. May we choose to follow Christ in giving up our shoes...and in giving up our lives. Where you lead us Lord, give us the strength to go...

Mark 10:20-23

20 And he said to him, Teacher, all these I have kept from my youth. 21 And Jesus, looking at him, loved him, and said to him, You lack one thing: go, sell all that you have and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; and come, follow me. 22 Disheartened by the saying, he went away sorrowful, for he had great possessions. 23 And Jesus looked around and said to his disciples, How difficult it will be for those who have wealth to enter the kingdom of God!"

2000+ Imagine Christmas

Over 2000 people came to Riverside this weekend to celebrate Christmas with this year's production: "Imagine Christmas."  Attendees raved that this year's program was the best they've seen at Riverside.  "Imagine" was not a typical Christmas program, in that it used the arts equally with drama.  Scenes usually included music, dance, and special effects unlike anything we've done in past Christmas programs.

Pastor John gave people a chance to respond to the hope of the Christmas message, and many people came forward in each service to put Christ at the center of their lives.  We don't have an official count on the altar call, but conservative estimates would say between 80 and 100.  We even ran out of Bibles at both shows on Sunday!  We all agreed that was a great problem to have!

I hope you came to one of the shows, because people will definitely be talking about "Imagine: Christmas" in years to come.

Year-End Tax Tips

Christmas is a great time to give to your church and local charities.  In case you haven't heard, the time to give is NOW!

If you give in person, the money must be received on or before December 31.

If you give by mail, the money must be postmarked on or before December 31.

Also, the check needs to be dated as 2007 to be applied to this year.

That's the simple version.  Here are some more detailed tips from the IRS website:

Giving to charity

Donations to charity are completely gift tax free and are also generally deductible for income tax purposes, subject to the usual limitations. However:

  • Only donations to "qualified" organizations are tax deductible. IRS Publication 78, available online and at many public libraries, lists most organizations that are qualified to receive deductible contributions, or you can ask the organization for a copy of its tax-exempt status determination letter. In addition, churches, synagogues, temples, mosques, and government agencies are eligible to receive deductible donations.
  • Avoid giving cash, and keep records (receipts, canceled checks) of all your donations, regardless of the amount. Although the value of your time serving as a volunteer is not deductible, out-of-pocket expenses (including transportation costs) directly related to your volunteer service to a charity are usually deductible.
  • You must obtain a "qualified appraisal" for donations of property worth over $5,000 (other than cash and publicly traded securities), and you must attach an appraisal summary (IRS Form 8283) to your tax return.
  • Donated clothing and household items must be in good condition. You may claim a deduction of more than $500 for any single item, regardless of its condition, if you include a qualified appraisal with your return.
  • For 2007, an IRA owner age 70 or older can directly transfer income tax free up to $100,000 per year to an eligible charitable organization. You can take advantage of this provision regardless of whether you itemize your deductions.
  • Consider donating appreciated securities that you've held for more than a year. You'll generally get a full fair market value deduction and avoid capital gains tax, too.
  • Consider grouping donations and making gifts in alternate years to create a larger deduction and opportunity to itemize.

Ladies Get a Taste of Heaven!

If you missed the Ladies' Christmas Tea this year...what were you thinking?!  The Ladies' Christmas Tea is arguably the best ladies event at Riverside each year!  If you didn't know that, don't blame yourself--just come next year!

Ardith Lanning (our kitchen crew's head chef) and her team made the best meal in Riverside history (at least in my recent memory), assisted by the men of our church.  The men did a great job--the only grumbling heard was that of their stomachs as they served (while all the women went through the buffet line)!  Toward the end of the night, Rachel West-Kramer sang a few songs, and presented a personal testimony of God's grace in her life.

The women were--of course--all smiles, all night long.  What better way to spend the evening than chatting it up with your girlfriends while being served delicious food by the wonderful men of the church?!  Even Pastor John came along, put on a bow-tie/cummerbund combination, and served his heart out.  What a great night for the women, and a rewarding night for all of the volunteers!

Overflowing with Baptisms!

The baptismal was literally (and figuratively) overflowing this weekend when our pastors baptized more than 75 people!  We haven't collected all the information cards, but conservative estimates say that at least 75 people went through the tank!

Pastor John talked about the reality of hell, offered the hope of God's offer to rescue us (if we'd just ask).  Then, he invited the crowd to accept God's offer and join him on the stage to be baptized.

We packed every service with baptisms!  This weekend was a milestone for SO many people in our church!

Watoto Children's Choir Spreads Joy

Last night, the Watoto Children's Choir (from Uganda) warmed our hearts with music and joy!

Watoto rescues orphans from victims of AIDS and war in Uganda.  Watoto raises them into leaders that will change their world.

"Look in the eyes of a Watoto child and you will see hope. You will see a soul transformed by God's faithfulness and provision. You will see a life rescued from a bleak future, changed in virtually every way possible. Look at a Watoto child and see a leader, equipped to make a lasting impact in their community and on Uganda." Gross-Outs, Games, and God (Fear Factors 2007)

Trick-or-Treating just doesn't compare to Fear Factors!!  Why?  Because what child wants to eat Snickers when they can eat live worms!...Come to think of it, I guess it's watching other kids eat worms that really gets them excited.  Either way, if you didn't come to Fear Factors this year, you missed  out!  You could've seen close to 1000 people competing in gross-out competitions (like bobbing for gummy worms in a dish full of jello and real worms!), tackling obstacle courses, bouncing on inflatables, playing carnival games, and amassing their own share of the 1000 pounds of candy donated by Riverside's faithful.  That amount of candy was enough to earn one worm pie in the face for each of our pastors.

The kids had fun, but they also learned about God--how he gives us power to overcome our fears, and love to spread throughout our community.  Voices throughout the crowd joined Pastor Aubrey in praying a salvation prayer at the end of the night...and we realized what the night was really about.  Gross-outs, games, and God...just another day for Reaction kids ministry!

Around 200 volunteers came early and stayed late to make the night a success!  I didn't hear a complaint all night!  Volunteering for something this fun is just too enjoyable!  Did you have that much fun last night?

New Office Phone Number!

Due to the wonderful publicity that the Dream Center Peoria has received over the past months the main phone line has been quite busy. It became apparent quickly that the best way to serve you was to have a new phone number issued. This will enable you to contact the church on the first try, rather than having to leave a message or get a busy signal.

The new church phone number is 309.676.7700

All of the 3-digit extensions will remain the same as well as the contact emails.

Fire at the Church

Wednesday night, June 27, right in the middle of evening services, the sign on the side of the building caught fire. A big thanks goes out to the Peoria Fire Department for all of their help with the situation. It was not a major fire, no one was injured, and there was no damage to the building, but our sign now has a "black 'i'".

Over 300 Attend Related Leaders

Over 300 area pastors and church leaders from 70 different churches representing over 17 different denominations attended a one-day seminar focusing on the issue of homosexuality at Riverside Community Church on Monday, March 12, 2007, with special speakers Mike Haley and Melissa Fryrear of Focus on Family.

"Riverside Community is pleased to host an event that directly addresses the often difficult and controversial topic of homosexuality," said John King, lead pastor of Riverside Community Church. "The rush to casually endorse homosexuality is causing widespread confusion about what the Bible has to say about this topic and how we are to live our lives as Christians."

Riverside Community Church acknowledges that this issue is becoming a difficult one, not only in society, but also in the church. Recent admitions by Pastor Ted Haggard have further highlighted the problem. King added, "It is our desire to gain insight and wisdom and provide a vision that balances biblical truth and compassion for the members of our church."

Speakers Mike Haley and Melissa Fryrear are both on staff at Focus on the Family, working closely with Focus on the Family's "Love Won Out" conferences, which draw hundreds every year to help church pastors and leaders understand how the church should respond and minister to those dealing with homosexuality.

Announcement Regarding North Campus

This weekend, the Elders of Riverside Community Church announced plans to merge Riverside’s North Campus, currently meeting at the Rave Theater, back into its Downtown Campus. The last service at the Rave Theater will be held on Sunday, January 28.

Although the congregation, which launched on September 10, 2006, had an average weekly attendance of 180 people, Lead Pastor John King explained that it never took off as expected, adding that the environment of the theater was not conducive to the atmosphere normally expected in Riverside Community Church services.

”Riverside is positioning itself to impact our city and our world in a positive way,” said Lead Pastor John King. “We will never be afraid to take risks and to admit when we feel like we may have not gotten everything right. In going to our North Campus, we proved both who we are and who we are not.”

Consideration is being given to the idea of hosting a Saturday night service at the Downtown Campus in the future.

The leadership of Riverside expresses huge thanks to all of the faithful volunteers who helped with set-up and tear-down every week at the North Campus. Their efforts are greatly appreciated.

More details about this decision will be discussed at Riverside’s annual Congregational Council on Wednesday, January 17, at 6:45 PM.
